VHF
From AB9RF
VHF is short for Very High Frequency, and refers to any signal between 30 and 300 MHz.
The VHF bands authorized in the United States at present are the 6 meter, 2 meter and 1.25 meter bands.
As the ionosphere's ability to bend RF diminishes sharply as the signal's frequency rises, the degree to which skip affects range varies widely though VHF. The relatively low-frequency six-meter band often displays regional skip propagation, while skip is rare in two meters, and elusively rare in 1.25 meters.
The relatively small size of VHF antennas combined with the relatively simple electronics required for effective operation make the band good for portable and mobile radios, although recent advances in semiconductor fabrication have made UHF and SHF portables more practical. Two-meter VHF FM repeaters are arguably the most common breed of amateur repeater station, and most hams have probably operated on a 2 meter repeater at some time in their amateur experience.
